Where is your character coming from? (write a short paragraph about your character’s background before jail):

Born and raised in Narthwich to a family of dock workers residing in Birk, Katja had always dreamed of the larger world. Life in Birk was harsh, ever dependent on the weather and tide to bring either fortune or disaster and from a young age she was forced to work to help maintain the family home and put food on the table. Through some connections she managed to land a tailoring apprenticeship and though she flourished in the role she always yearned for more - more adventure, more challenge, just -more-.

During her time as an apprentice, the young woman met Vidar, an apprentice blacksmith, and the pair struck up a fast friendship. They would often meet and chat while moving goods from their respective workplaces to customers along the docks with Katja entertaining him with outlandish tales made up with her vivid imagination. Vidar was enamored with the young woman and soon convinced her to become his wife.

How did your character find themselves in jail awaiting trial? (Please write a few short paragraphs describing what poor luck brought your character to this point in their life):

Grief stricken by the news of Vidar’s arrest and sentencing, Katja immediately began to formulate a plan to get vengeance. There was only one man who could be responsible for such an underhanded act, Lorvgath, a smith of meager skill and an old rival to Vidar’s mentor. Lorvgath always hated and resented their prosperity and the happiness the pair naturally exuded, and had no problem voicing his disdain for them at local taverns while he was drinking himself silly.

Katja knew what she had to do, even though her punishment would likely be severe. If she couldn't be with her husband, then Lorvgath would not get the satisfaction of watching her suffer without him. She could only hope that wherever Vidra was now, he knew she was fighting for him still. On the decided day, Katja dressed as she usually did, donning her sewing apron and tucking a pair of large, razor-sharp shears into them. You simply can't cut leather with dull shears. As soon as the opportunity arose, she bought out an order Lorvgath had placed with another seamstress for double the price, a paltry cost for her revenge. The young woman made her way to Lorvgath’s smithy, knocking and waiting for him to answer. At first shock danced across the man’s ugly face when he opened the door and saw her there, but she quickly explained how the other seamstress was unable to fill the order, and that she would be taking over. Her voice was quiet and meek, she kept her eyes lowered as she spoke of how she didn’t trust the measurements of the previous seamstress and his arrogance won out, soon inviting her in with a sneer of distaste.

Lorvgath made no attempts to hide his pleasure at Vidar’s arrest, taunting her and making snide comments about how prosperous his forge had become in recent weeks. Feigning grief, Katja kept her head down and continued along with the measurements. Conveniently, as she had spent the majority of her life as a seamstress, Katja could easily multitask and use both hands independently, and with near blinding speed. As she measured around his chest and his arms were both outstretched, she deftly pulled the large shears from her apron and brought them up, ramming them into the man's throat. She yanked them free, stabbing wildly into the chest, throat and face of the awful blacksmith over and over again. When she finally stopped and breathed deeply, looking at the grisly sight before her, she felt only satisfaction at another order filled.

Katja left the smithy drenched in blood and a peaceful expression. She walked silently down the street as passersby looked on, confusion plain on their faces, until she stopped at the first guard she found and spoke softly. “I killed Lorvgath, he’s in his smithy” Her voice didn't waver as she spoke, settling her gaze unflinchingly onto the guard. The guard, shocked and alarmed by this sudden confession, called for some of his companions and they all promptly made their way to the smithy. The scene before them was disturbing - Lorvgath lay there with his chest shredded and mutilated, ripped apart by the large shears still embedded in his right eye. The guards placed the irons on her immediately and escorted her to her cell, where she sat calmly awaiting her sentence. Vidar was avenged, whatever the outcome. The rest was a blur, until she stumbled onto the ship.
